A new beginning...

Well guys and gals, our time together is coming to an end this week. I hope that you have had an amazing semester with me and I hope that you have learned lots. I also hope that you enjoy your second semester of 6th grade with Ms. Forte. I know that she is very excited to begin working with you.

Here's a quick breakdown of our plans for this week...

Monday - First half of the Middle of the Year assessment; review grammar, spelling, and vocab

Tuesday - Second half of the Middle of the Year assessment; review grammar, spelling, and vocab

Wednesday - Unit 3 Week 5 Grammar test, spelling test, and vocab test, Mrs. Forte will be working with you today to prepare you for next semester

Thursday - Unit 3 test and acting out scenes from a play

Friday - Class Party day! Our party will begin at 2:00 - all parents are invited.

Unit 3 Week 5 Day 1

Hi! Today was a GREAT day! Thanks for being SO awesome!

Here's what we did today...

Reading: We learned our new vocabulary words for Week 5 (the LAST week of Unit 3 AND the LAST week before Christmas break!). We read our vocabulary story and we discussed the moves that good readers make to be great readers.

Language: We discussed our grammar skill for the week: irregular verbs. I think this week's grammar skill is going to be very simple. If you have any problems with it though, DON'T WAIT to come talk to me!

We learned what our new spelling words are for Week 5 - and they are tricky! We also found out that our writing focus this week will be how to write a scene for a play.

I hope you've had a wonderful day and that you continue to have a perfect evening! You're homework is to begin working on your Spelling Contract.

Today was review day! Are you ready for Week 4's Assessment? Be sure to study your spelling, and vvocabulary words - those are two easy A's if you study!

In Social Studies, we learned about Ida Tarbell today. Your homework is draw a picture of Ida Tarbell (do NOT copy the picture out of the book) and write an explanation about why it is difficult to do the right thing sometimes, even though you know it is the best thing.

Unit 3 Week 4 Day 4

Hellooooooo!

This post is going to be full of information for all my students and parents. If you have ANY questions, please don't hesitate to contact me by emailing jmoore@pcboe.net OR by calling the school after 4:00 - the number is 334-298-8744.

Here are a few announcements about important upcoming dates:

* ALL make up work for my class must be turned in by Wednesday, December 7th. No exceptions!

* ALL class party money ($4 per person eating) must be turned in by Wednesday, December 14th!

* AR Deadline is Wednesday, December 14th.

Test Dates:

* We will have our Week 4 test on Wednesday, December 7th.

* We will take our Middle of the Year Assessments (which determine the leveled-reading group in which students are placed) on Thursday, December 8th AND Friday, December 9th.

* We will have our last weekly test - Week 5 - on Wednesday, December 14th.

* We have our Unit 3 Assessment on Thursday, December 15th.

* Our class party will be Friday, December 16th beginning at 2:00 (the time may change - stay posted).

And finally....

My HOMEBASE will be playing a "Gift Game" during our class party. Here are the rules:

- each student is responsible for bringing one gift to school by Friday, December 16th in order to participate (if any student is unable to provide a gift, please let me know and I will have a gift prepared so that no student misses out on the fun)

- the gift must average $5 or less.

- the gift must be some item found around your home
- nothing vulgar, disrespectful, or against school rules.

- gifts can not be taken from parents, siblings, or neighbors without permission as there is a good chance that the student who brings the gift will NOT return home with the same gift.

- the gift must be wrapped.

The students in my homebase and I have discussed what are and are not appropriate gifts to bring in order to play the "Gift Game." I have asked them to get some random object from home that is of no importance. It may be silly, funny, an old toy no one plays with anymore, or just something that they think their classmates would find humourous, like a joke book.

Unit 3 Week 4 Day 2

Whew! This has been a cold day! But guess what?! It's DECEMBER! Woo Hoo!

Here's what we did today...

Reading: We started reading "Emperor..." How did you like the NONFICTION article?! I hope you are enjoying it so far. We will finish up the story tomorrow as we find out about what was in the emperor's tomb!

Language: We worked on Grammar! We learned about predicate adjectives and predicate nouns. If you had any trouble with either of these concepts today, you need to see me ASAP so that I can help you!

Social Studies: We read the first part of Chapter 6: Lesson 2 and answered ten questions regarding what we read.

Intro Day! Woo hoo!

Today we learned what our new spelling words are (we wrote each work five times each), and we learned what our new vocab words are. We also started working with linking verbs and discussing what archeaologists do.

We will continue our study of Ancient Civilizations tomorrow. Our test day for this week will be on Wednesday, December 7th.

In Social Studies, we started reading Chapter 6: Lesson 2 and reviewing our vocab words.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving break and are well rested and ready to knock out the next 14 days! Christmas break will be here before you know it!

Today was Review Day! Are you ready for this week's test?! I hope so! Tomorrow is test day. You will take a Grammar test on helping verbs, main verbs, and contractions; a spelling test; a vocab test; and our reading test. My fingers crossed that everyone makes super awesome grades!

I will be sending home a letter in Falcon Folders tomorrow that will explain our Class Party on December 16th, so if you are a parent and you have any questions regarding the party, if you will look for the letter in your child's Falcon Folder tomorrow it should answer most of your questions.

Reading: We answered the comprehension questions for 'Building Green', we reviewed our vocabulary words, and we completed two Practice workbook pages.

Language: We practiced our spelling words, worked on our Grammar skill for this week: helping and main verbs, and we wrote a poem using the steps of the writing process.

Social Studies: We read pages 255-256 and answered five questions.

Here's what we did today:

Reading: We read "Building Green" and reviewed our vocabulary words by playing a review game on the SmartBoard.

Language: We learned about five different tenses of verb phrases - we will continue learning about these tenses on Monday. We also played a quick Spelling word review game.

We did not have Social Studies today because we went to Pride Break (or at least those of us who read our AR books).

Happy Intro Day!

This week's Reading lesson will be very chaotic because of the Thanksgiving break we get next week. I am going to need EVERYONE'S complete attention in class in order for us to make it through the daily lessons.

Here's what we did today...

Reading: I showed you our new vocabulary words for this week, we discussed this week's theme, which is Energy, and we completed a couple of workbook pages. If you were absent, you need to make sure that you make up these assignments (look in the While You Were Out center).

Language: I introduced our grammar skill for this week: main and helping verbs, we sang the Helping Verb jingle (everyone will be responsible for knowing the jingle by heart next Tuesday in order to sing it to the class), and we learned what our new spelling words are.

Social Studies: We continued reading chapter 6: lesson 1. Today we learned about the Spanish-American War.

We reviewed our Grammar skill for the week: future and past tense; we reviewed our writing focus for the week: fictional narrative that features dialogue; we reviewed our vocabulary words and our spelling words by completing proofreading activities on the SmartBoard...and we played Sparkle!

Social Studies: We read about how the United States acquired Alaska and we drew an outline of the state of Alaska, labeled three major cities in Alaska, and wrote five facts that we have learned about Alaska over the past few weeks.

Here's what we did today...

Reading: We finished reading "Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street", we reviewed our Vocab words, we practiced using our words in context and we discussed the importance of making good grades because NO ONE TAKE AWAY YOUR EDUCATION!

Language: We reviewed our Spelling words, went over this week's writing lesson: Fictional Narrative that features dialogue, and we discussed our homework for this long weekend. Our homework is to revise the draft of our essay and to have someone else (a parent, a friend, etc) revise the draft as well).

Social Studies: We played Jeapordy! and took the Chapter 5 test.

What's up, what's up?! I hope you're day has been superb!

Here's what we did today...

Reading: We reviewed our vocab words, we started reading "Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street."

Language: We went over the next step of the Writing Process: Drafting. We discussed how to include, punctuate, and make sure that dialogue is purposeful in a narrative. We reviewed our Spelling words, and we practiced how to write sentences in future tense (you add 'will' in front of the verb).

Social Studies: We finished presenting our PowerPoint presentations to the class, and we started reviewing for Chapter 5 test, which we will take TOMORROW!

Unit 3 Week 2 Day 1

Well, here we are....starting another new week! Woo Hoo! We're SO close to Thanksgiving and Christmas that you can almost smell the yummy food cooking in the oven! :o)

Okay, okay, enough about yummy food...Ha Ha! Here's what we did today...

Reading: I introduced our new Vocabulary words and we read our Vocabulary story, called "A Mysterious Limousine" This story features the new words in the context of the story. I suggest you go in and re-read the story so that you can see how the author uses the words!

We discussed that we will be learning how to monitor our comprehension as we are reading, and I offered a few tips on various ways that you can monitor your comprehension a story or a difficult text.

Language: We started learning about our grammar skill for this week: future and past tense. I am hoping that this week's grammar skill will be a tad bit easier than those pesky direct and indirect objects we struggled with last week!

We also previewed our new spelling words for this week - which all end in /er/, /or/, or /ar/.

Our next Spelling, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Reading tests will be TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15th!

I introduced our Writing focus for the week, which is a Fictional Narrative that features dialogue. I explained that we will be following the Writing Process this week, and as we all SHOULD know, the Writing Process begins with brainstorming ideas! So, I told everyone that by the time they go to bed tonight they need to have completed their Dialogue chart! I hope you don't forget to complete yours, or you will be behind tomorrow!

Social Studies: We presented our PowerPoints to the class, which focused on important people from Chapter 5: Lessons 3 and 4. We will finish up our presentations tomorrow and then we will complete a review of Chapter 5. Our Social Studies test will be Thursday!

HOMEWORK ALERT!: Tonight's homework is to complete Practice Book page 83 (don't lose it because you will turn it in tomorrow AND we will be using the chart on the back side of this page as we are reading our main selection this week!)

You have also been asked to complete the first step of the Writing Process: Brainstorming using a dialogue chart! Don't forget to complete yours tonight!

Happy Thursday! Woo Hoo! Tomorrow is Friday! :o)

Here's what we did today...

Reading: We started reading "Juan Verdadez" (Ver-DAH-dez). It seems like most of you are really enjoying this story. That makes me super happy! It's always fun to read stories that we actually like, right? We also played a bubble review game with our vocab words and we discussed basewords and prefixes/suffixes.

Language: We reviewed our grammar concept this week: Direct and Indirect Objects! Are you getting it?! If you're not, you need to see me first thing TOMORROW! There is no reason why anyone should be confused at this point because everyone has had the opportunity to come see me for extra help! You know that I am always happy to help. We reviewed our spelling words today and I encouraged all of you to go home and read through your spelling words and practice spelling them at least ONE time every single day because doing so will help you make an A on the spelling test.

Social Studies: We read Chapter 5: Lesson 4, which focused on women's equality.

Hello! I hope your day has been as awesome as you are! :o)

Today was INTRO day! We now have a new set of spelling words, a new set of vocabulary words, a new grammar skill that we are learning, AND we will be practicing another reading skill!

Parents, please know that this week's grammar skill is a little tricky. I have advised all of my students to be prepared and to take lots of notes. If you could make sure that your child is completeing his/her language homework every night, I know that understanding the grammar skill will be a lot easier. Practice ALWAYS helps us learn!

Here's a friendly reminder that everyone's THIRD AR book is due FRIDAY, November 4th! Make sure you're reading!

Wow! Today was a super busy day! I think I need to catch my breath. Whew!

We took our weekly assessments (Spelling, Grammar, Vocab, Reading) for Unit 2 Week 5 today. If you were absent, you need to see me next week to make up the tests.

Today was also Parenting Day! It was great to see a lot of your parents today, and I hope you enjoyed getting to show them around PCIS. Please know that your parents are ALWAYS welcome to drop in for a visit...ANYTIME!

In Social Studies, we previewed Chapter 5: Lesson 3 by defining three vocabulary words and making predictions about two topics that will be discussed as we read through Lesson 3.

Unit 2 Week 5 Day 3

Good afternoon! :o)

Here's what we did today...

Reading: We finished reading 'The Great Serum Race', we reviewed our vocabulary words by filling in the blanks where the appropriate word belonged, we discussed sequence and how there are key words to look for in a story that will signal you to notice a sequence (examples: before, next, after, first, last, finally, etc.)

Language: We reviewed this week's Grammar skill: Appositives by completing two exercises on the SmartBoard. If you are having ANY issues at all with appositives, please come and see me ASAP so that I can help you! I don't want anyone to make less than a B on this week's tests and getting additional help so that you can better understand a difficult concept is always a great idea! :o)

We reviewed our Spelling words by completing another fill-in-the blank activity, as well as a crossword puzzle. We also practiced pronouncing the spelling words just to make sure that everyone is saying the words correctly.

Social Studies: We worked on our People Profiles that we researched on Monday.

Unit 2 Week 5 Day 1

Whew! We covered A LOT of ground today! Were you able to keep up?!

Here's what we did today:

Reading: I introduced you to our new vocabulary words, we discussed sled dogs, which will be the focus of our lessons over this week, and we started talking about how to tell the sequence of a story based on key words and events.

Language: We learned about appositives, those pieces of information that provide a more indepth explanation of a noun or pronoun (just like the one you just saw! Go Mrs. Moore! See if you can use one when you talk or write tonight). We also previewed our new spelling words and took a spelling pretest, and we discussed our writing focus for this week, which is a Persuasive Essay.

Remember, you will be choosing your own topic to write about this week. I will NOT be assigning you a topic like have up to this point. You should try your very best to stay with me as we discuss each step of the Writing Process this week. If you complete tasks as they come, you won't be overwhelmed when they're due! :o)

Social Studies: We researched names and organizations that played major roles in helping cities become better places for immigrants. We will continue our research tomorrow, as well as begin the next step of our project...the Profile Sheet! :o)

Happy Review Day! How do you feel about all of this week's information? Are you ready to make awesome grades on tomorrow's tests?! I hope so! Remember our motto: NOTHING LESS THAN A B!

Here's what we did today:

Reading & Language: We reviewed our grammar skill: possessive nouns (remember to always ask yourself the following two questions: #1. Who or What is owning something? and #2. How many whos/whats are owning the something?). We reviewed our vocabulary words and our spelling words. We discussed problem and solution and we spent time in centers.

Shout out to Mrs. Miles's homebase because they made it through Whole Group instruction AND all ten minutes of centers today! Woo Hoo! WAY TO GO PEEPS! :O)

Social Studies: We listened to the team leaders debate Politcal Machines and I announced that the people sitting at table #2 won snack day since they had the best debate! Congrats table # 2!

And finally, one more shout out to Jonathan D., Mary B., and Austin S. for having all five of their AR books read! Congrats! I will be purchasing sausage biscuits for your in the morning!

Don't forget to STUDY, STUDY, STUDY for our tests tomorrow! I am counting on everyone to make nothing lower than a B! :o)

Unit 2 Week 4 Day 4

Hey Hey! Happy Wednesday! :o) Today was another GREAT day in English class! I'm loving all of these wonderful days with you guys and gals!

Here's what we did today...

Reading: We read "The Golden Touch" and discussed the problem and solution, as well as how the king in this story could be compared to the king in "Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter." We reviewed our vocabulary words (which some of us REALLY need to study), and I reminded everyone that our test will be on Friday this week!

Language: We reviewed possessive nouns (which some of us REALLY need to study), and we played a quick game of ping-pong spelling with our face-to-face partner. Make sure that you are studying your spelling words and your vocabulary words because these are two VERY easy 100 point grades that you can get every single week!

Social Studies: We read page 227 with a partner and we looked at the different viewpoints people had concerning political machines.

Make sure you're practing the skills at home that we are learning about in class! Remember, "No one trains for second place!"

Reading: We finished reading "Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter" and we discussed problem/solution. We filled in a problem/solution chart, and we answered the Comprehension Questions aloud in class. We reviewed our vocab words and I reminded everyone that our tests will be on FRIDAY!

Language: We continued our lesson on possessive nouns by taking a few quick notes in class that should help you remember the differences between singular, singular possessive, plural, and plural possessive. If you are having any issues with possessive nouns, don't wait to come see me!

We reviewed our spelling words and we discussed step three of the writing process: Revising a Draft. Don't forget that everyone is responsible for turning in every single step of the writing process that we have been working on! Reading: We read "Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter" and we discussed how to summarize a story by including the following information: Character, Setting, and Plot using problem/solution. We reviewed our Vocab words and we participated in Center activities and teacher-led small groups.

Language: We discussed how to make singular and plural nouns possessive. We focused mainly on the regular (boy/boys') and irregular (man/men's) nouns. If you were at all confused by what we did today, please don't hesitate to come see me so that I can help to clarify ANYTHING that you don't understand. I'm always happy to help! :o)

Hey Hey! Today was a MUCH better day! I'm super proud that my kids are back! I'm not sure who those other people were that showed up yesterday, but thank goodness they've been replaced with some awesome kids! :o)

Here's what we did today:

Reading & Language: Today was review day! We reread "Zoo Story" and played a few rounds of Sparkle. We also played a quick game of Pop Goes the Weasle in my homebase. Hopefully we can play that game again because you guys did great playing it!

Tomorrow is our Test day, so make sure that you are prepared...remember, NO GRADES BELOW an A or B!!

Social Studies: We took a quiz on the main vocabulary from Chapter 5: Lesson 1 and we previewed the vocabulary for Chapter 5: Lesson 2. We began reading Chapter 5: Lesson 2.

Happy Mrs. Moore's Birthday Day! Woo Hoo! I hope you've had a GREAT day!

We spent the majority of class talking about calamities and the different ideas that two creators included in their "Care Cube." I hope you enjoyed our conversation.

We also spent a large part of class discussing our behavior in class. Tomorrow is the first day of the second nine weeks, which is the perfect chance for a fresh start! We have a new deal in English class...no one is allowed to make anything but A's and B's from now on! This is a goal that everyone can achieve if we all make a promise to ourselves to try our VERY best and to make sure that we study and pay attention in class. I am VERY excited about the second nine weeks because I want everyone to succeed and to accomplish our class goals as well as their own personal goals.

Reading: We reread "Zoo Story" and discussed what the staff of Miami's MetroZoo did to protect the animals before Hurricane Andrew hit. We reviewed our Vocabulary words, and I reminded everyone that our weekly test will be on Thursday this week.

Language: We discussed plural spellings of words like ox (oxen), child (children), and we even previewed next week's lesson by discussing plural possessive nouns. We practiced our Spelling words and we participated in centers.

Social Studies: We previewed the vocabulary words for Chapter 5 by completing workbook page 48 and we filled in an outline on Chapter 5: Lesson 1.

Today was the first day for Unit 2 Week 3! Our test on this unit will be Thursday, October 13th. This is the date that your Spelling Contract will be due also.

We read about how to prepare an emergency kit in case of natural disaster emergencies, and we learned what our new spelling and vocab words are for this week. Our lesson's theme this week is Helping Hands. I am excited to hear some of your stories about how you have helped people in need.

Here's what we did today:

Reading: We read 'The Sun and the Earth' and learned about reading a graph/chart. We know that when we look at a graph/chart we have to look at all of the outside information before we can ever begin to make sense of the information that appears in the actual graph/chart area. We also reviewed our vocabulary words today, be sure to be ready for your vocab quiz tomorrow...remember, it's a crossword puzzle, so you are going to need to know how to spell the word correctly!

Language: We continued learning about commas in a series. I am super proud of how quickly you guys are picking up on this concept! Just always remember, if you have three or more things, people, animals, etc., in a series, you MUST use a comma to seperate the items!

Don't forget to study for your spelling test! The team that gets the highest average on this Spelling Test wins a "Classwork Pass"!

Social Studies: We played Jeapordy! today! I hope you are ready for your Social Studies test tomorrow! :o)

Hi! Here's some information I gave to everyone today that parents may be interested to know:

- A new book order has gone out to all of my students who were interested. Parents can now place and play for all book orders on-line by going to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs and entering the following class activatio code: GX782

- The end of the first nine weeks is Tuesday, October 11th (Mrs. Moore's birthday!). Be sure that your child has read, tested on, and passed FIVE chapter AR books by this date so that his/her Reading grade will not be affected by low AR scores.

- Any make up work that a student may be missing needs to be made up and turned in by Thursday, October 6th!

Here's what we did in class today:

Reading: We finished reading 'The Night of the Pomegranate' and we discussed Character, Setting, Plot.

We reviewed our vocabulary words in context and practiced a fluency passage.

Language: We learned about serial commas (not ceral like you eat for breakfast). Serial commas are used when you have three or more items in a series. For example: "Mrs. Moore favorite chocolate candies are M&M's, Snickers, and Carmelos." Notice how there are three items in the series, but only TWO commas used! :o)

Social Studies: We started working on a study guide for our Social Studies test, which we will take Wednesday. We also completed Workbook page 45 and turned it in for a grade.

Unit 2 Week 1 Test Day!

Hi! How did you do on your test?! I hope you feel like you did very well! I have graded the tests and you will find out tomorrow what you made. In the mean time, here are the results of the Spelling Test Competition:

Mrs. Miles's class: The girls won with an average of 91.5 (the boys made an 89.4).

Mrs. Moore's class: The boys won with an average of 99.7 (the girls made an 88.3).

I am SUPER proud of the boys in my homebase because that's almost a PERFECT score! :o)

If you were absent today, you need to come in during PE if you are a band student, or make sure you remind me during intervention if you are not a band student so that you can take the make up test.

Here's what we did in Social Studies:

We read the rest of Chaper 4: Lesson 4 and answered the questions at the end of the lesson. These questions were turned in for a grade.

Here's what we did today:

Reading: We finished reading "How Tia Lola Came to Stay". We discussed how to make inferences based on the information that the author provides us. We reviewed our vocabulary words and I reminded everyone that our weekly test will be on Wednesday, September 28th!

Language: We continued our lesson on common and proper nouns by completeing a few short activities on the SmartBoard where we had to find words that needed to be capitalized (which means they were either the first letter of a sentence, the letter I, or a proper noun). We also reviewed our Spelling words by completing a handout that I gave out to everyone. If you were absent, you need to check the "While You Were Out Center" to get your handout.

Social Studies: We started working on a poster project where small groups are responsible for included seven pieces of information about a self-selected inventor/discoverer on a poster that will hang in the hallway. We will finish our posters on Monday. I am SUPER excited to see the final product....I hope they are AWESOME!

Progress Reports went home in Falcon Folders today, so be sure to get your Progress Report, your planner, and your Falcon Folder signature sheet signed by a parent!

Here's what we did in class today...

Reading & Language: We completed a quick review of the material we have learned about up to this point in the school year. Once our review was over, we took a Unit 1 Assessment. This is a very important assessment because it will inform me of how well you are learning the concepts and skills we have been studying in class since the second day of school! I am very anxious to get the results back!

Social Studies: We read Chapter 4: Lesson 2. I gave everyone a hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge that I have been known to give a pop quiz on information when students have been asked to read a section of material silently during class. So....hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge! :o)

We will begin a Unit 2 Week 1 tomorrow, so come to class ready to learn something new!

Unit 1 Week 5 Day 5 = Test Day!

Today was our weekly test for Unit 1 Week 5. I have been grading the tests, and I must say, I'm a little disappointed that after all of our practice with independent clauses and run-on sentences that the grades aren't a little higher. Please remember that no matter how much we practice together at school, you will never be able to get a firm grasp on any concept that we are studying until you go home and practice that skill on your own!

Here's what we did today:

Reading & Language: Unit 1 Week 5 Day 5 - Test Day. We took a spelling test, a vocab test, and our reading test.

Social Studies: We re-read Chapter 4: Lesson 1 which focused on different types of inventions and the inventors who created the amazing products that we STILL use today. For example, the telephone - created by Alexander Graham Bell; the lightbulb - created by Thomas Edison and improved by Lewis Latimere; and the airplane - created by Wilbur and Orville Wright.

We will continue our journey through Chapter 4 tomorrow!

Reading: We read two free-verse poems today and discussed alliteration (the repetition of a consonant sound, for example: Jolly Jessica just jumped joyfully). We completed Grammar Practice Workbook page 28 and turned it in for a grade. We also completed a spelling handout that anyone who was absent will be able to find the "While You Were Out" center.

Language: We continued our discussion about run-on sentences, and we practiced correcting run-ons. Remember, there are THREE types of run-on sentences and THREE ways to correct run-ons!

Our Week 5 test will be Monday, and our Unit 1 Assessment will be Tuesday! Be prepared! :o)

Social Studies: We did not have a Social Studies class today due to Pride Break.

Hi! Here's what's up in English class this week...

Reading: We are at full implementation of our Reading Program this week! Can you believe it?! We are reading "Interrupted Journey", which is a story about protecting wildlife - which just happens to be our theme for this week's lesson. We are practicing being fluent readers by paying attention to punctuation, and showing excitement in our voice when we read.

Language: We are working on run-on sentences this week. Remember, if you have two or more independent clauses, you must separate them by adding a comma AND a conjunction, or by using a semicolon. We also started talking about comma splices today, which is when you have two independent clauses separated by a comma. We have been learning that the comma MUST have it's best friend, the conjunction in order to make the sentence complete.

Social Studies: We are working on Chapter 4: Lesson 1 and 2 this week. We will be completing a graphic organizer that will explain inventors, their inventions, and why those inventions are significant.

Hey Hey! Did you have a GREAT day?!

Here's what we did in class today...

Reading: We read an informational essagy called "The Origin of Ghana" on page 96 in our Reading books. We discussed the text features (pictures, captions, etc) that allow us to preview the essay and make predictions regarding the essay's topic. We also reviewed our vocabulary words by playing a short vocab matching game.

Language: We continued working on how to punctuate complex sentences, which are sentences that feature a dependent clause, as well as an independent clause. The advice that I have been telling you to remember is this: If you need it, leave it alone. If you don't need it, hug it with commas and tell it bye.

Here's an example sentence:

Mrs. Moore, who is addicted to chocolate, ate a Snickers for lunch.

The INDEPENDENT clause is "Mrs. Moore ate a Snickers for lunch."

The DEPENDENT clause is "who is addicted to chocolate"

I knew to put commas around the dependent clause because someone could come up and erase the dependent clause and it wouldn't matter because I would still have a complete sentence or an INDEPENDENT clause...So, I hugged the dependent part with commas and told it bye! :o)

All of this information can be a little overwhelming if you don't pay close attention and if you don't practice! So, if you feel like you need extra help, come see me during Intervention time. Don't wait because I want you to be able to make a super awesome grade on the test.

We reviewed our spelling words by playing a quick spelling game and working on a handout that everyone took home in order to finish. The handout is due tomorrow.

Our Reading/Vocab/Spelling test for Week 4 will be Monday!

Social Studies: We completed a short activity on the different lifestyles people lived in the late 1800's.

A Monday kind of Tuesday...

Hello! Did you enjoy your LONG weekend?! I sure did! Now, it's back to the regular schedule, except today has been a very Monday kind of Tuesday! :o)

Parents, Progress Reports went home in Falcon Folders today, so please sign your child's report on the signature line at the bottom of the page, as well as your child's Falcon Folder Signature Sheet, and your child's planner, and send all of this back to school tomorrow. Thanks!

Here's what we did today:

Reading: We starte reading "The Magic Gourd" which in the genre: folktale. We discussed how folktales can be classified as such because they contain talking animals and they are stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. It is also important to remember that folktales usually have some type of lesson that the listener is suppose to learn from the story.

Language: We continued our study of complex sentences by looking at examples of independent and dependent clauses. Remember, if something is independent, it can stand alone, without any help; however, if something is dependent, it needs help because it can't stand alone.

We will have our test on Week 4 Monday, September 12th. Students will have vocabulary graphics due on this day as well. I provided the students with an explanation of vocabulary graphics last Friday. They were responsible for writing down the ten parts of a vocabulary graphic that they will be responsible for completing for EACH vocabulary word (there are eight words). I provided each student with eight sheets of copy paper as well. If anyone has a question about Vocab Graphics they need to see me ASAP!

Social Studies: We are reviewing Chapter 3 by completeing a series of activities over the next few days. Today's activity was to find all of the modes of transportation that were mentioned in Chapter 3 and sketch the outline of the US. Tomorrow we will use this information to complete another activity.

Reading: We started a new week today: Unit 1 Week 4. We discussed traditions and read our preview text, which was from the poetry genre. We introduced and discussed our new vocabulary and spelling words, and we talked about how our next test will be Monday, September 12th.

Language: We learned about independent and dependent clauses (or what we have previously called them: complete sentences and fragments.

Social Studies: We worked with a partner to solve a real-world problem from the 1890's.

Reading & Language: We reviewed main idea and details, practiced writing a paragraph that featured a topic sentence (main idea) and details, discussed how two simple sentences can be joined - or COMBINED - to form a compound sentence using a conjunction, a semicolon, or a semicolon-however-comma.

After our review, we played Sparkle with our spelling words, then we took our weekly test for Unit 1 Week 3.

Social Studies - We took a pop quiz on Chapter 4: Lesson 1, and then we reread Chapter 4: Lesson 1 as we completed a graphic organizer which helped to guide our understanding of the different inventors of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

I promise you that I am going to try my very best to do a much better job at keeping you up-to-date through our website (there are post-it notes everywhere to help me remember :o) ).

Here's what we did today:

Reading: We reviewed the Time for Kids article "Gecko Glue, Cockroach Scouts, and Spider Silk Bridges" by discussing main idea and details, working on being fluent readers and studying vocabulary and spelling words. I let you all know that I realized yesterday at my after-school meeting with other teachers that our Weekly Test will be on Thursday of this week; not on Friday as I had originally thought. I hope this doesn't cause you too much of an inconvenience in your studying!

Language: We continued our lesson on combining sentences using conjunctions - AND COMMAS! Today we added the awesome semicolon into the mix! I always LOVE it when a student is able to correctly feature a semicolon in his/her writing...it makes me smile!

Social Studies: We worked on composing an outline for Chapter 4: Lesson 1. There was a little grumbling and complaining as everyone figured out that composing an outline doesn't produce the neatest paper since we have to erase and start over sometimes. Although, we are still learning the process of organizing our outlines, I hope that you find using an outline to be a very productive and EASY way to study for all of your upcoming Social Studies tests this year.

Hello! How did you do on the Weekly Assessment? I hope you did VERY well! I will be grading your tests and getting them back to you ASAP!

Reading & Language: We took the Unit 1 Week 2 Assessment today.

Social Studies: We completed Chapter 3: Lesson 3 & 4 today, which means we will have a test tomorrow. The best way to prepare for your Social Studies test is to read over the review that we completed in class today.

Week 2!

Hi, my peeps! :o)

I hope you've had a wonderful day! Here's what's been going on in our class the past two days.

Reading: We have been reading about the lost city of Machu Pichu. We've read three stories (one pre-story, one main story, and one post-story). Have you learned anything new about searching for lost cities?! We are all doing a really great job at paying attention to fluency when we read. Be sure that you are practicing what we are learning in class by paying attention to commas, and all other forms of punctuation, including periods, exclamation points - be sure to show excitement in your voice when you see one of those little gems! - question marks, and even quotations.

I hope you are studying your vocab words and your spelling words! We will have our Weekly test for Week 2 on Thursday!

Language: We have been learning about Subjects and Predicates this week. I feel that some of us are still a little uncertain of our instincts when it comes to finding subjects and predicates, so here's a quick example.

Mrs. Moore loves it when her students are excited about learning!

First, you have to find the verb. The verb in the above sentence is 'LOVES'.

Then, you know that everything before the verb is called the COMPLETE SUBJECT.

If I want to take my complete subject and mush it down into one word that still answers the question "Who or what loved?" I know that my answer will be Mrs. Moore, which means, Mrs. Moore is the simple subject.

Here's an example of how to find predicates:

First, you have to find the verb. The verb in the sentence about is 'LOVES'.

Finally FRIDAY!

Woo Hoo! We made it to Friday! We should be super proud of ourselves because we've accomplished a lot this week. I know that I am super proud of you for being so patient with me as we try to get ourselves on a perfect schedule all while abiding by the correct procedures! You are doing a GREAT job! :o)

Reading: We began a new week in our reading unit yesterday (Unit 1, Week 2, Day 1), which means we now have new vocab words, as well as new spelling words. If you have any questions about your new words, please don't wait to ask me about them. As you know from reading the piece of paper that I gave you with the new words on it, you will have a Reading test and a spelling test on Thursday, August 25th.

(Parents, please be advised that our tests will not occur on a specific day of the week. Rather, our tests will occur every six days.)

Parents, your child will be taking home his/her Falcon Folder on Tuesday. This folder will contain all of the graded work that he/she has done in my class over the past week. You can expect the Falcon Folder to go home each Tuesday. I will always try my best to include an up-to-date progress report, as well as a short note from me that explains what we are working on at that time. There will be a signature sheet for you to sign stating that you recieved the folder and it's contents, and then your child will be asked to return the folder and ALL of it's contents back to me on the following day (Wednesday). If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact me.

The End of a Unit

Hello! I hope your day has been simply amazing! :o)

Reading: Today we completed Unit 1 Week 1! For those of you in my first period class, we had a very special treat today...Mrs. Lewis, our Reading Coach at PCIS, came to teach us a Reading Lesson! I hope you enjoyed her lesson and her wonderful energy. She is such an encouragement to me and I hope that we get to see her in our classroom a lot this school year! We will NOT be taking a Unit test or a Spelling test with this first unit because we all needed time to get back into the swing of school. However, with Unit 2, which we will begin tomorrow, we WILL be taking a Unit Test. I will let you tomorrow when our tests will be.

Language: We continued our discussion of sentence types and we even got to practice a little by completeing a workbook page together on the SmartBoard. We will be starting a whole new Language unit tomorrow, so be ready!

Social Studies (for those of you in my Homebase): We continued studying Chapter 3 by adding to our knowledge some new information about timezones. I hope you know what time it is in New York if it's 7:00 at your house! How about what time it is in San Antonio if it's 10:00 at your house?

Beginning of Year Assessment

Hi! I hope you had a great Monday! Today we started taking our Beginning of the Year Assessment which is just a means of monitoring students' reading successes throughout the school year. Once we complete the Assessment on Wednesday, we will be able to identify specific students' needs as they relate to specific core areas of Reading and Language Arts. I am vey anxious to get the results back so that we can really start working on the areas where extra help/info may be needed in order to build on my students' prior knowledge.

During Reading class, we finished reading "Summer of the Swans" and we identified how Sara's mood changed throughout the course of the story. We also discussed how the author of "Summer of the Swans" included various literary devices to draw our attention to certain details that were presented in the story.

In Language, we continued discussing multiple-meaning words, and sentences/fragments. We also added capitalization and punctuation into the mix today! I am very proud of how well my classes did when it came to identifying errors in capitalization and punctuation!

During Social Studies, we started reading Chapter 3, which begins on page 129. We discussed the Transcontinental Railroad and how it affected travel in the United States.

We will pick up tomorrow where we left off today! Have a GREAT night!

We survived!

Yay for us! We survived the first three days of school! Whew! Are you as exhausted as I am?!

Today we read the short story "Sam's Summer Search" which featured our vocabulary words for this Unit, we practiced our spelling words, and we started reading "Summer of the Swans." We will continue reading "Summer of the Swans" on Monday as we continue to learn about what it means to be a fluent reader.

If you are in my Social Studies class, we continued studying the different hemispheres in the United States by labeling our maps.

Second Day...even better!

Hello guys and gals! Today was a GREAT day! :o) Thank you all SO much for making everything run smoothly as we completed our first reading lesson today. You are wonderful kids and I am very fortunate to have you in my class!

Today we started Treasures Lesson Unit 1, Week 1, Day 1. While we did not make it all the way through the lesson, we did learn some new vocabulary words, which I can't wait to hear you add to your everyday conversations!

We will pick up tomorrow where we left off today, which is reading a short story that features our vocabulary words, getting a list of spelling words, and reviewing complete sentences and fragments.

For those of you who are in my Social Studies class, we started reviewing the different regions of the United States by focusing on the Southern Hemisphere. We will continue working on other regions of the US tomorrow.

A New School Year!

Welcome to the Sixth Grade! I hope you are as excited to begin a new school year as I am! We're going to have a GREAT year together!

Today we played a few games just to get to know a little bit of information about one another, then we discussed our classroom procedures (like, what to do if you need to sharpen a pencil, go to the restroom, or throw away trash). If you have any questions about anything we discussed today, please don't hesitate to ask.

We concluded our day together by writing "I am" poems and making a "Me" peep to hang up in the hallway next to our classroom. Our peeps will serve as an informal greeting to everyone who walks through our hallway!
